Overview of the AKDN Scholarship Program

Expressing about The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP), it is an opportunity for exceptional scholars from chosen countries*, who have no other means of financing their education. This scholarship program is for postgraduate studies.

Those who are awarded are chosen through a global, annual, and competitive application procedure. In each cycle, The AKF ISP offers a limited number of new awards (scholarships). The application period for the academic year 2024-2025 is now open and will close on 31st March 2024.

* Currently, the following countries are eligible for the AKF ISP. If you are a national of any of these countries, you will be able to apply for the open opportunity.

In France, Canada, Portugal, and the USA, applications will be accepted from those applicants who are originally from one of the above-mentioned countries.

Aga Khan Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

If you would like to be eligible for application for this scholarship, you must:

  • Possess outstanding academic records
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent training/professional experience
  • Showcase genuine financial need**
  • Construct a thoughtful, muti-source and reliable funding plan**
  • Be admitted to a famous postgraduate university/institution*** and
  • Hold a strong leadership potential, extracurricular and/or entrepreneurial achievements, professional experience, and volunteer contributions.

Note: The foundation will give preference to young professionals who are under the age of 30.

** It should be noted that the awards (scholarships) will be offered according to need, but you need to consider the AKF ISP a resource of last resort and secure different or multiple sources of funding to lessen (reduce) the amount you request.

*** Although the priority for the Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme is for Master’s programmes, the foundation will also consider applications for Ph.D. degrees. For ISP funding, local/regional universities plus distance learning education (programmes) will be acceptable, provided that the quality of the program (course) is maintained. Remember, part-time programmes applications and short-term course applications will not be considered. Applications from students who have already enrolled in or started their postgraduate programmes will also not be considered.

Funding (Award Conditions)

There is financial support for students who are taken on board for this scholarship. These scholarships are structured as half grant and half loan which means the students need to repay 50% of the award amount. *Scholarships for Master’s education will be granted for the whole duration of the degree. For PhD degrees, scholarships will be conferred for the first two years, after that the students will be expected to find alternate sources of funding.

This award will cover student’s tuition fees and living expenditures. It will not cover the cost of clothing, international travel, furniture, or living expenditures for family members. To maintain the award/scholarship, students need to show good academic standing in addition to ongoing financial needs during the postgraduate programme.

* The repayment period is 5 years commencing 6 months after the first of these events – graduation, termination of studies, or the withdrawal of support following failure to meet the academic standards expected of ISP students. It should be noted that students will need to bear the cumulative service charge of 5% per annum that will be levied on the loan amount. To co-sign the loan agreement, the student’s head of family or any other guarantor will be required.

How to Apply for Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme

Local units of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB), or Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) handle the applications. Interested applicants will need to use the eligibility tool to confirm their eligibility. The tool is available on the official webpage of scholarships under the heading of Eligibility Criteria. The eligible candidates will receive an email address for their local unit. Candidates can then use the email address provided to connect with the local unit which will further explain the application procedure and required documentation.
