UNESCO/China Great Wall Programme Scholarships – Details

Under UNESCO/People’s Republic of China (The Great Wall) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme 2024-2025, there are around 75 fellowships for advanced studies are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Candidates from 135 developing member states in Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Arab region are welcome to apply for these fellowships.

These fellowships are tenable at a chosen number of Chinese universities and intended for scholars and students who plan to pursue advanced studies or undertake individual research with periodic guidance from the assigned supervisors for one year in China.

The medium of instruction for the study programmes will be in English or Chinese subject to the available fields of study at the chosen universities. Those students who are applying for the Chinese-taught study programmes should have obtained (acquired) a certain level of Chinese proficiency before they take up research or study in their fields of interest. The chosen candidates will study in the host universities as visiting scholars either at the general or senior level.

Available Study Programmes Under UNESCO Great Wall Programme Scholarships

Interested candidates should visit the official webpage of the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for the fields of proposed studies available/conducted at the chosen universities in China. You should read all the details on the official webpage and then decide according to your requirements.

Eligibility Criteria for UNESCO/China Great Wall Programme Scholarships

If the applicants are from the invited member states, they are eligible to apply provided that they meet the following requirements.

  • Those who are applying for General Scholae Programmes have to hold a high school diploma and they must not be older than 45 years of age.
  • Those who are applying for Senior Scholar Programmes have to be master’s degree holders or they should be associate professors (or above). Their age must not be older than 50.
  • Proficiency in English is required. Applicants who apply for Chinese-taught General/Senior programmes, their proficiency in Chinese language has to reach HSK Level 3.
  • Applicants should be in good health physically and mentally.
  • They should meet the requirements of admission to the applied universities in terms of language proficiency, academic ability, and other related criteria.

Funding Availability for The Great Wall Scholarships

There are facilities offered by both The Government of the People’s Republic of China and UNESCO. Let’s check out the details of the same.

Facilities Offered by The Government of the People’s Republic of China 

  • Tuition exemption
  • Monthly stipend – CNY 3000 for General Scholars, or CNY 3500 for Senior Scholars for the coverage of pocket expenditures and meals.
  • On-campus accommodation or they will be offered accommodation subsidy.
  • Selected candidates will also be provided with comprehensive medical insurance plus a protection scheme for international students in China.

Facilities Offered by UNESCO

  • International travel (one round trip) to and from China.
  • Pocket allowance of US$80 per month.
  • Candidates will also receive a termination allowance of US$200 for the coverage of access luggage charges at the time of return to candidates’ home countries.

Note: It should be noted that the candidates will not be offered any allowance for financing or lodging of their spouses or dependents.

Deadline for Application Submission

The closing date for applications is 10th March 2024. It is advised to submit the applications as early as possible to avoid any problems.
