Eligibility Criteria for Leiden Excellence Scholarships 2024
If you like to apply, you then need to meet Leiden University Excellence Scholarship LexS requirements.
Academic Requirements – Those who would like to apply for the scholarships must have obtained outstanding academic results in their previous study program(s) which need to be related to the Master’s program for which they are applying. As an indication, the applicants should be among the top 10% of graduates in their previous study program. Proof of ranking is not required by the university since this information is entirely to indicate the competence level.
Study Program Requirements – Applicants/students for all Master’s programs at Leiden University except Leiden Law School’s LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs. Study programs commencing in February at the Faculty of Sciences and Leiden Law School, the Faculty of Humanities.
Nationality Requirements – Those who want to apply must possess a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport and might not be eligible for student finance through the Netherlands government/Dutch government (Studiefinanciering) except the applicants/students applying for the programs mentioned as under for which there are no nationality restrictions.

*EEA/EFTA: These include all EU countries and Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
An Additional Note for UK Applicants/Students – Since the United Kingdom has now turned out to be a non-EEA country, the students or the applicants from the United Kingdom are now eligible to apply for this opportunity i.e., LExS. It is to be noted that this will not apply to students/applicants who were already residing in the Netherlands and registered in the BRP of their Dutch community prior to 1st January 2021.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) 2024-2025 – Scholarship Amount
The award will be conferred for the duration of the study program. There are three levels of scholarships/awards.
- € 15,000 of the tuition fee
- € 10,000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
It should be noted that it is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients are required to submit proof of sufficient funds for their student visa/residence permit application.
