A summer program for PhD students is being offered by IIASA to undertake a scientific project on a subject/topic relevant to the IIASA research agenda. The application period has now started and the applications will continue to be received until 12th January 2024. You need to provide two letters of reference as well which are required to be received by IIASA latest 24 hours past the application deadline.
Each year, The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) hosts up to 50 doctoral students from all parts of the world in its YSSP (Young Scientists Summer Program).

Eligibility Criteria for IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program 2024
This specially knitted program has been launched for Ph.D. students (ideally around two years before receiving their Ph.D. degree) working on a topic compatible with the current (ongoing) research at IIASA and a desire to discover the policy implications of their work.
The selected participants will be provided with a mentor, they will directly be working under the mentorship of an experienced IIASA scientist in a novel (unique) interdisciplinary and international research environment. A paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article) will be produced by them. They will also get opportunities like building up contacts for future collaborations within the worldwide network of the institute.
Applicants will have the option to work with up to two programs. IIASA strongly encourages the applicants to carefully go through all descriptions of the program prior to finalizing their decision. All nationalities are welcome to apply, although IIASA prioritizes the citizens or residents of the countries of the National Member Organizations (NMO).
It is to be noted that participation in the IIASA YSSP is only possible for one summer (you could however be able to apply several times) and you have to be present at the institute (i.e., no fieldwork or working remotely) for the entire duration of the program. There is no upper age limit to apply for this program.

Funding Availability for the Young Scientists Summer Program
The majority of IIASA’s National Member Organizations (NMOs) offer grants to enable young scientists (either their own nationals or foreign students who are studying in their own countries) to participate in the YSSP. If you are successful (selected for this opportunity), you will receive a notification about your funding shortly after the evaluation procedure.
If you happen to be ineligible for an NMO scholarship, they need to find an alternate funding source from your home institution or other sources to finance your participation in IIASA YSSP. It should be noted that IIASA has limited funds for outstanding applicants from non-NMO countries. These are conferred (awarded) as part of the selection procedure.
Students who are selected and do not have funding available to continue with this program nonetheless may have various funding options such as:
- The YSSP Fund supports students from developing countries.
- The Roger Levien Fellowship offers Pardee RAND Graduate School students an opportunity to participate in this program called YSSP.
- The Prof. Jyoti and Prof. Kirit Parikh Fellowship work with the aim of providing well-needed support to talented/exceptional researchers from India and other developing countries.
Visa Requirements and Visa Support
If you are from non-EU (EU/EEA/Swiss) countries, you will have to apply for a D-visa that allows you to travel to Austria and live there during your YSSP period. This visa will also allow you to travel to other countries of the Schengen zone. If you have accompanying family members, they will have to apply for C-tourist visas and they will be able to stay in Austria only for up to a maximum duration of 90 days.
Participants from the European Union and Switzerland will have to apply for an Aufenthaltsbescheinigung. IIASA will initiate contact with the relevant embassies in your countries to support your visa once you are selected and informed about your selection.
