About PhD Position in Political Science
The department is recruiting a doctoral student in political science. The commencement date is 2nd October 2023 or by agreement. This doctoral venture or project will ideally depart from one of the university’s or department’s five research profile fields (areas) and applicants are encouraged to write a research plan related to one of the five profiles.
The university is looking for a doctoral student who is highly motivated and creative to participate in the PhD program and has the knack or ability to think and work independently. As a doctoral candidate, you will be able to shape your project to a significant extent.
About the Employment
This position in the department will be for a 4 years duration of full-time studies (240 ECTS). As a PhD student, you will be able to participate in teaching or other departmental activities up to twenty percent of the time. In these cases, your employment will be extended correspondingly.
The teaching will be conducted on campus whereas the student will work in Umeå. What is expected is the student’s active participation and involvement in the activities of the department.

Eligibility Criteria
- Students or people with a degree at the advanced level and who have fulfilled course requirements for a minimum of 240 ECTS points, of which at least 60 ECTS points are at the advanced level and a minimum of 90 ECTS points are in peace and conflict studies or political science are considered eligible to apply for this opportunity.
- People or students who have acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad will also be considered eligible to apply for this opportunity.
Requirements
- The qualifications of the applicants will be assessed in terms of their ability to do or complete a PhD dissertation and fulfill the course requirements of the PhD program. The evaluation process will consist of a review of the academic performance and quality of submitted writing samples plus the project plan of the applicant.
- The evaluation of the candidate’s ability for the completion of PhD program will also include the evaluation of the candidate’s communicative skills (both written and oral), analytical skills, independence, critical skills, and ability to complete the tasks within a given frame of time.
- The candidate needs to be fully conversant with and proficient in English (both written and oral).

Financial Benefits/Salary
The candidates will be offered a salary according to the present salary order for doctoral studies. The present entry-level salary for PhD students is 29000 SEK/per month.
