Programme Details and Financial Benefits of the TWAS Fellowship

  • TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable in Kolkata (India) at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences for studies leading towards a PhD degree in one of the fields of natural sciences and life sciences for 4 years with the possibility of 1 1-year extension.
  • The Centre carries out these research activities – A schematic representation of the sub-research fields/areas (blue circles) of the four departments (purple-colored circles) and their interconnections (green lines) is shown in the figure available on the official announcement.
  • Applicants have the option to get registered for a PhD degree in their home country (sandwich option), or they could enroll in a PhD program at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (full-time option). In either of these two options, the programme will entail only one journey to the host country.
  • It is to be noted that the admission to the PhD programme at the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences will rely/depend on the successful completion of coursework (around 1 year duration).
  • Successful candidates will be offered a monthly stipend for the coverage of living expenses and food. Remember, the awarded monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. Candidates will be offered free on-campus accommodation. The monthly stipend will not cover candidates’ comprehensive health insurance. However, a small contribution towards a Contributory Medical Scheme will be deducted by the Centre. It should be noted that the benefits will be partial reimbursement of the doctor’s fees and medicine expenses, if any, and only for expenses/costs incurred in Kolkata.
  • Staff or students are not provided with any comprehensive health or medical insurance by the Centre. Thus, the fellows are advised to have their own medical insurance prior to joining this programme for the coverage of medical emergencies.
  • The medium of instruction is English.

16th August 2025 – it is the deadline to apply for a preliminary acceptance letter to the SN Bose Centre

31st August 2025 – it is the last issuance date for the preliminary acceptance letters by the SN Bose Centre

22nd September 2025 – it is the deadline to submit the application form. All required documents should be submitted to TWAS through the TWAS online portal. 

Eligibility Criteria for the TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme

If interested, the applicants will be required to meet the following eligibility criteria.

  • They should be nationals of developing countries (other than India)
  • The maximum age of the candidates should be 35 years on 31st December of the application year
  • Applicants must not possess any visa for temporary or permanent residency in any developed country or India
  • They should have a master’s degree in the fields of chemistry, physics, mathematics, or biology. They must have completed a minimum of 5 years of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in any recognized university or institute
  • They must be accepted by a department of the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences
  • Prospective applicants should go through the website of the Centre and search for a potential supervisor under whom they want to pursue their research. They should contact them.
  • It should be noted that the requests for acceptance have to be directed to the Dean (Academic Programme) by sending an email to deanap@bose.res.in. While contacting, the applicants should fill out the SNB Form that is available on the official announcement, and then request an acceptance letter with a copy of their CV
  • If the medium of instruction of the candidates was not English, they should provide evidence of English proficiency
  • Evidence is required showing that the candidates will return to their respective countries upon completion of the programme
  • They cannot take up any other assignments while the fellowship period lasts
  • If they bring accompanying family members (dependents), they need to be financially responsible for them
