This PhD Position is jointly funded by The Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies (ENGEROM), DNRF Centre of Excellence, and Centre for Culture and the Mind (CULTMIND). The one (successful candidate) who is selected will work closely with the Centre leader Ana Antic, and Co-PI Jessica Carlsson Lohmann, Head of Research at the Competence Centre for Transcultural Psychiatry, Ballerup. Based at the Center, the successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary and dynamic international research team.

Regarding the PhD studies it consists of research programs that qualify students for independent and wide-ranging research, development, and teaching at an international level. The PhD position will culminate in the submission of the PhD thesis that needs to be defended in public by the student.

This PhD program has to be undertaken as a 3-year full-time study within the framework of the 5+3 study program. The one who is chosen for this position will be expected to work both in collaboration with the research team of the center and independently.

Eligibility Criteria for the PhD Scholarship in Medical Humanities

This PhD scholarship is offered in the field of medical humanities. Therefore, those who are interested in applying for this funded opportunity need to meet the following criteria.

  • Applicants need to have a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project, for example, literature, linguistics, modern languages, anthropology, or medical humanities
  • They need to be interested in widening their knowledge (information) in the field of migration studies, translation, transcultural psychiatry, and cross-cultural communication
  • Those who have done their education in Denmark must possess a master’s degree covered by the collective agreement for academics in the state sector
  • Those applicants who have completed their education from abroad (outside of Denmark) must either hold a master’s degree equivalent to a Danish master’s program (2 years) or, as a minimum, a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor’s program (3 years) and be assessed as having professional qualifications at master’s level
  • Those whom education has been done outside of Denmark will need to obtain an assessment of their education from the Danish Research Agency
  • Applicants are required to have skills in written and spoken academic English at a high level. If necessary, the department may request the candidates to provide documentary proof of their English skills.

Salary and Terms of Employment for PhD Position at the University of Copenhagen

  • The successful candidate will be provided with an attractive salary in accordance with an agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and the Ministry of Finance. The salary range will begin at around DKK 31,242 (EUR 4,182) + an 18.01 % contribution to the pension scheme.
  • As per the agreement, the PhD fellow will need to do tasks at the relevant department to an extent corresponding to 840 working hours (6 months) without additional payment. For instance, the work obligation can consist of teaching.
  • If you are an international applicant, the university will offer a wider variety of services for international researchers and accompanying families, including support prior to (before) and during the candidate’s relocation and career counselling to expat partners.
