The application period is now open for scholarships in 2026. The deadline for the applications is 12^th October 2025. The Nordic Scholarship Programme is presented to contribute to building capacity in the production of knowledge about Africa, and to establish and promote relations with and between the research communities of the Nordic countries.

Purpose of the Programme (NAI Scholarship)

The scholarship programme has been announced to offer a one-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) to facilitate the usage of the library collections of the institute on contemporary Africa (periodicals, books, government publications, and newspapers), and to support connections to present work at NAI through research hosts at the institute. These scholarships are conferred once per year.

About the Nordic Africa Institute

The institute is famous for conducting research, and it offers resources that help further understanding of contemporary Africa. The institute is of the view that research-based knowledge and analysis offer a strong base for informed decisions. NAI contributes to the fulfilment of the world development agenda.

It is a Swedish government agency that functions under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is funded by the governments of Sweden, Iceland, and Finland.

Eligibility Criteria for the Nordic Scholarship Programme

Candidates must be a master’s, PhD student, or postdoctoral researcher in the field of humanities or social sciences
They have to apply regardless of their citizenship, but they are required to be affiliated with a university or research center located in Finland, Sweden, Iceland, or Denmark
They must be pursuing Africa-oriented research or studies

Financial Coverage and Other Benefits

This scholarship opportunity will cover traveling expenses for the least expensive fare from the candidate’s residential address (in Finland, Sweden, Iceland, and Denmark) to Uppsala and return. Recipients will be offered a desk and computer in a shared office at NAI and free accommodation centrally located in Uppsala. There will be a subsistence allowance of SEK 400 per day and free photocopying up to a maximum of one thousand copies. It must be noted that this scholarship opportunity does not provide any healthcare insurance or other insurance.
