HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme – Details
The university wants to attract top candidates from all parts of the world to come and pursue full-time PhD studies under this scholarship scheme. The most prestigious scholarship package is offered under the HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme. The scheme is also called the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship. The funding is offered to chosen exceptional full-time PhD students. The application period is open and will go on till the deadline.

Under this scholarship, HKU Presidential PhD Scholars will be provided with strong academic and training support from the university, for example, an individualized advisory service, opportunities to interact with prominent scholars, and training in teaching. A specially arranged group consisting of renowned faculty members will also provide expert advice, additional mentorship, training opportunities, and oversee the academic career paths.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
It needs to be noted that the Hong Kong University (HKU) Presidential PhD Scholars will be exceptional candidates who are passionate about research, applying for the full-time PhD degree program at HKU.
Those who apply for the full-time PhD programme will be taken into consideration for the HKU-PS Programme. Since there is intense competition, those who apply for the HKU-PS Programme during the main round (1st September to 1st December) will be strongly encouraged to submit their applications for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme as well.
Financial Benefits Under the HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme
Each successful HKU Presidential PhD Scholar will be provided with a package of up to approximately HK$439,500 (US$56,350) in the first year, and then up to around HK$422,000 (US$54,110) in each of the following years during the normative period of study. The offered package includes:
- Cash award for providing support for research and living costs
- HK$40,000 in Year One, and then HK$20,000 per year in the remaining normative period of study
- Composition fees exemption for the entire normative study period (i.e., HK$44,500, HK$47,000, and HK$49,500 per year for 2025/26, 2026/27, and 2027/28, respectively)
- There will be HK$28,400 per month as a postgraduate scholarship
- Candidates will also be provided with a travel allowance for research and conferences, amounting to HK$14,200 per year
- Financial support will be offered to chosen exceptional students for an additional study year beyond the normative study period to reward their excellent research output and progress
- A guaranteed hall place in Year One with the possibility of renewal
