Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme – Details

The call for the Government of Ireland Scholarship has now been announced. This program is for postgraduate degree programs to be conducted at eligible Irish universities/higher education institutions. Thus, the call for both the Ireland Government postgraduate scholarships and postdoctoral fellowship scholarships for the academic year 2025 is now open.

The purpose of these scholarships and fellowships is to support research master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral students pursuing or intending to pursue their full-time research in any discipline from the universities in Ireland (which are on board). This scholarship opportunity is managed by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

The Irish Government has established a new national research agency called ‘Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland’ that will amalgamate the work of the Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland. The postgraduate scholarship programme and postdoctoral fellowship programme (as mentioned earlier) support suitably qualified research master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral students pursuing, or who are intending to pursue their full-time research in any discipline.

Types of Degrees and Duration of Scholarships

Eligibility Criteria for the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

All nationalities and Irish students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
To proceed to the application form, all interested applicants have to first pass a preliminary eligibility quiz on their online system.
There is no age limitation.
To apply for a master’s degree program, applicants have to possess a Bachelor’s degree program. Those who want to apply for a PhD degree program, they must hold a master’s degree.
Those who are waiting for results might also apply. Therefore, they need to provide a provisional certificate from their institution/university (home institution).
On the application form, applicants have to submit their overall degree results, which have to be endorsed by their host institution and verifiable on an official transcript.
It has to be noted that all applicants must be backed by willing supervisors who are able to guide them on their research projects during their study period in Ireland.

Funding Availability for the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

Under this scholarship scheme, suitably qualified research master’s and doctoral candidates pursuing or who intend to pursue full-time research in any discipline. Successful candidates will be offered a value up to a maximum of €31,000 per annum in any approved year and the value will consist of the following:

Per annum stipend of €22,000
Per annum eligible direct research expenditures of €3,250
A contribution to fees that includes non-EU fees up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum

Funding for the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

These scholarships will be offered to suitably qualified postdoctoral students pursuing full-time research in any field (discipline). These scholarships can be provided either for 1 or 2 years duration and will consist of the following:

In the first year of the award (scholarship), a salary of €46,305 will be offered. In the second year, €47,879 of the award
Successful candidates will be offered eligible direct research expenditures of €5,000 per annum
Employer’s PRSI contribution
