Eligibility Criteria for Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South

The call 2025 has been announced, and the applications are now open. Eligible candidates are invited to apply. Let’s find out the eligibility criteria ahead.

·      Candidates who are from the eligible countries and have the nationality of these eligible countries (selected Global South countries) are eligible to apply.

·      The proposals are required to be submitted by the candidate, the supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university (South).

·      There are no restrictions imposed on the research field, nonetheless, preference will be given to subjects/topics related to the North-South context.

·      It must be noted that degree students who intend to obtain a (joint) PhD degree at Ghent University are only eligible to apply. For this scholarship scheme, exchange students are not eligible.

·      This doctoral program is for students who are at the start of their PhD degree. To some/limited extent, PhD candidates/students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research. By the time the fellowship begins (1/10/25), at least 36 months of doctoral research are still required to complete the PhD.

·      On the part of Ghent University, it likes to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship opportunity. This is the reason that a supervisor at Ghent University can support a maximum of 2 candidates per call provided that they are both of a different gender.

Co-funding for Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South

·      With this scholarship scheme, co-funding happens to be mandatory. For this, the candidates are required to consult the call documents for detailed information on what co-funding is allowed. Generally, the below-mentioned conditions have to be guaranteed by the partner in the South.

·      There has to be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center in the South.

·      Another condition is that a written statement is requested from the partner university mentioning that the candidate will receive a full-time salary or local PhD scholarship for 2 years (24 months) while the candidate works on the PhD program at the partner university in the South, and

·      The candidate will sufficiently be exempted from teaching or other assignments so that a full concentration on the PhD research in the South can be given. Applicants will be able to dedicate a maximum of 10% of their time (full-time appointment) to other tasks such as teaching or other kinds of tasks.

Mobility Scheme of the Scholarship

·      Students are required to begin and end with a research stay of three to twelve months at Ghent University.

·      The first research stay to take place at Ghent University has to be begun between 1st October 2025 and 28th February 2026.

·      It must be noted that a minimum of 24 months (2 years) of locally funded research in the South has to be scheduled between the first and last research stay at Ghent University in Belgium.

·      The promoter at Ghent University will receive a bench fee amounting to €310/per month of research in Ghent plus €8.000 travel budget to cover (part of) the operational expenses/costs as well as part of the costs of travel of the student and both the local promoter and Ghent University.
