Dalhousie University Killam Predoctoral Scholarships – Details
These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to exceptional graduate students in thesis-based programs for Master’s or Doctoral level in any field (discipline) in the engineering, sciences, social sciences, and humanities. For the selection, the applicants are chosen from the Harmonized Scholarship Process based on the results of the university-level review process and departmental support.
For Master’s students, the students could hold the Killam Scholarship for up to 2 years (but not past the end of the 2nd year of their program). For PhD students, they could hold a Killam Scholarship for up to 3 years, potentially extended to up to 4 years, provided that the students are successful in getting a Tri-agency doctoral scholarship during the award period of Killam (but not past the end of their 4th year in program).

- Those who are applying for a Master’s award must not yet have started their Master’s program to be eligible to apply.
- Those applying for a PhD award must have consumed (spent) less than one year in their doctoral study program by 1st May of the award year to be eligible to apply. It needs to be noted that if they have transferred or plan to transfer from a Master’s to a PhD program without completing their Master’s, their time-in-program starts as of the date of transfer.

Funding Availability for Dalhousie University Killam Predoctoral Scholarships
Successful candidates will receive $42,000 per year or $14,000 per term value of this scholarship/award including all forms of FGS-managed support like provincial scholarships, Tri-Agency awards, etc. It also needs to be understood that the funding offered by non-FGS-managed sources like faculty research grants, departmental awards, and department allocations will not make any impact on the value of Killam funding received.

Relocation Allowance to Scholars
A relocation allowance will be offered to new Killam Scholars who relocate to Nova Scotia to begin their graduate program, they will be provided with travel costs. Reimbursement of expenditures (not to exceed the low-cost air ticket available by the most direct route) will be offered upon completion of travel and submission of the expenses of travel claim form laced with all original receipts boarding passes (if applicable).
Reimbursement claims have to be submitted no later than the first term-end at Dalhousie. Family members’ transportation and personal effects reimbursement will not be provided.
Non-Paid Interruption of Award
Successful candidates will be offered non-paid interruptions of awards for up to one year for an approved absence leave from the graduate program for which they have received funding. Candidates could not interrupt an award to get (take up) another award or to pursue their studies other than those for which they have gotten funding.
Paid Parental Leave Under Predoctoral Killam Scholarships
Predoctoral Killam Scholars (both Master’s and Doctoral) are entitled to apply for paid parental leave benefits. It is effective from 1st May 2021. These benefits have been arranged to support those candidates who cannot obtain other paid parental leave support via scholarship funding or tri-agency research.
The benefit received will include a monthly stipend of up to $1250 for up to the duration of one year. The stipend amount will be lessened by funding obtained from other sources. It is advised to check out the complete details of paid parental leave in the official announcement.
