Description Regarding the Global Professorships

The British Academy takes these professorships as a brilliant opportunity for established researchers to do high-risk, curiosity-driven research in the humanities and social sciences in a United Kingdom research institution. The awards for the Global Professorships are for individuals in an institutional setting. This opportunity is expected to add mammoth value to the UK host institutions and vice versa, and therefore the projects have to be significant and must lead to unique and novel collaborations.

The British Academy, with these professorships, looks to support academics that are proposing ambitious beyond the latest (state-of-the-art) applications that break new ground. Applications from historically and/or structurally disadvantaged groups and female researchers are encouraged. Those who would like to apply must intend to work in any field of the humanities or the social sciences. Outputs involving creative practice such as visual practice, musical composition and performance, filmmaking, and creative writing are welcome but will be taken into consideration to fall within the British Academy’s remit only when form part of an integrated venture (project) of critical or historical significance.

Eligibility Standards for Global Professorships

To be considered and apply for this opportunity, you need to meet the eligibility standards mentioned ahead.

  • These grants are open to mid-career and senior researchers in any field (discipline) within the humanities and social sciences (recognized in their respective field or with outstanding promise) who are presently employed outside the UK on a permanent contract (that could be part-time or full-time) or, if temporary, would normally be a contract that will not end during the grant time. Any exceptions have to be expressly agreed upon with the British Academy before the application being submitted for such an application to be taken into consideration as eligible.
  • The candidates need to have a doctoral degree or have equivalent research experience.
  • At any one time, PIs could not have more than one British Academy award of a comparable nature.
  • Under this program, an individual cannot be the PI on more than one bid including through various or different host institutions.
  • Applicants have to be available to take up an unpaid leave of absence, employment, or a long-term secondment at an eligible institution in the UK. If this becomes unclear from an applicant’s national setting, the British Academy then welcomes communication with the candidates/applicants before applications being submitted. It is worth noting that eligible institutions include but are not limited to the British International Research Institutes.
  • It must be noted that the scholarships/awards are available to individuals only and will be held in an institutional context. Co-applicants will not be entertained/permitted.
  • Awards are not going to be made retrospectively, meaning that the work for which the support is requested must not have started before the scholarship/award is announced. Applicants have to be for new or novel research ideas that are coherent on their own and are innovative.
  • Those who are interested in applying will be required to provide a formal statement of support issued from a senior member of their proposed host institution in the United Kingdom (expected to be a Pro Vice-Chancellor or of the equivalent rank, or at least Head of Department/Institute/Faculty).

Note: Applicants need to be outside of the United Kingdom by the time the application is submitted. Those who are working outside England (UK) but are employed by a United Kingdom institution primarily are ineligible (not eligible) to apply. Interested applicants have to show that they have been in constant touch with their United Kingdom host institution before the application. It has to be noted that the Academy will not be able to assist the applicants with locating or facilitating contact with the host institutions in the UK.

Duplicate applications with a similar purpose to more than one British Academy funding program will not be considered/accepted.
