The American University Washington D.C. is famed for academic excellence, global engagement, and leadership development. On part of the AU Global Leader Scholars, they achieve, serve with vision, and inspire. Eligibility Criteria for American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

If you want to apply for the scholarship, you need to meet the eligibility set for this opportunity. Preference will be given to:

Overseas (international) students who have overcome different challenges and obstacles as well as those from diverse and underrepresented world and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Those applicants with a minimum 3.8 GPA out of 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of grading class) for 9th to 12th grades.

Those students with a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism, leadership, community service, and to advancing people’s needs in their respective countries.

Students with one of these tests:

  • 0+ IELTS (all sub scores must be 6.0 or above)
  • 95+ TOEFL iBT (all sub scores have to be 20 or above)
  • Sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL (Taken after May 31, 2017
  • 29 minimum ACT English
  • 33 minimum SAT Reading subscore
  • A score of 630 or higher on the SAT Digital version section that is entitled ‘Evidence-Based Reading and Writing’ (EBRW) as of March 2023
  • 65 minimum PTE
  • 125+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 115 or above)
  • Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each sub-score has to be 169 or higher.

Students who are enrolled still in their secondary/high school and graduating by June 2025.

Important Note: It is to be noted that the students in the IB system need to plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with a minimum of 3 HL subjects. Those students who are studying in the British A-Levels system have to complete a minimum of 3 A Levels and finish their 13 years of study prior to August 2025.

Ineligibility for Scholarship Opportunity

Those applicants who fall into the following categories are ineligible. They are not eligible to apply if:

  • They are a U.S. citizen, permanent residents of the United States, pending permanent residents, or dual citizens of the United States, and another country.
  • They are enrolled in or have started any postsecondary studies already at another university in their home countries or the U.S.
  • They graduated from secondary school earlier than 2023.

Funding Availability for AU Emerging Global Leader Scholar

All billable American University expenses will be covered such as full tuition, board, and room for two international students who are in need of a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the U.S. Non-billable expenses will not be covered like mandatory health insurance, airline tickets, books, taxes, and miscellaneous expenditures which students are required to pay out of pocket (approximately US$4000 per year).

The scholarship (AU EGL) is renewable for a complete 4 years of undergraduate study based on the student’s continued satisfactory academic performance. Students who are interested in all majors offered at American University are eligible to apply.

New Scholarship – AU EGL Partial Scholarships – in addition to the two full 2025 AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarships which cover all billable expenditures, American University will also offer the students up to eight additional generous AU EGL partial scholarships which are valued up to US$40,000 per year.

Eligibility Criteria for AU EGL Partial Scholarships – There is no additional application required for the application procedure to be eligible for these scholarships. The applicants for these partial scholarships will be chosen from talented/exceptional applicants who complete the AU EGL scholarship procedure successfully. If the applicants are recommended for an AU EGLs partial scholarship, they will be required to submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial US$4000 for the difference not covered by the AU EGLS partial scholarship. For instance, if the students are provided with US$40,000 per year, they will be required to submit financial documents confirming US$42,000 on account for their first year rather than (instead of) the full estimated expenses of US$81,620.

How to Apply for the American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

There are two steps to be followed/done to apply for this scholarship opportunity which are mentioned ahead.

Step One – If the applicants want to be considered for AU EGLS full or partial scholarships, they need to first submit their common or coalition application with all supporting documents before the deadline which is 1st December 2024.
