Funding Availability
Below-mentioned funding is what will be offered to successful students. Let’s check out the details.
- Airfare will be offered. Return flight expenses from your nearest international airport (economy class) to Johannesburg could be covered by the authority (AfricaLics) if collective fund-raising efforts for the study visit are successful. In case the collective fundraising is not successful, students need to fund the costs themselves or they can apply for the funds from their other sources or their university.
- For the study period, the successful visiting fellows have to get comprehensive health insurance. AfricaLics Secretariat may reimburse the costs providing that funding allows.
- As far as the living costs during the study visit to the University of Johannesburg are concerned, they are normally covered with a stipend amounting to around $600 monthly. This offered amount needs to cover all costs while the students are in Johannesburg related to living expenditures and travel around the city, including to and from the campus (UJ campus). Successful students are encouraged to fund-raise for their living expenses while they are in Johannesburg themselves since there is no guarantee by AfricaLics that collective fundraising activities will be successful.
- AfricaLics will cover the costs for participation in joint courses. It should be noted that mentoring will be conducted voluntarily unless fundraising for a normal payment is successful. The visit by mentors and home supervisors to Johannesburg (PhD VFP workshop 2025) will only take place if additional fundraising happens.
- In case AfricaLics agrees to fund a 3-month study visit to Johannesburg (South Africa), the provided scholarship will provide coverage for the costs related to the students’ visit. If candidates are bringing their spouses, kids, or others along, the related costs to the dependents (accompanying members) will not be provided. If the student goes for additional travel in South Africa, the scholarship will not provide coverage for that travel costs unless as part of chosen and approved VFP activities.
